Report from the Treasurer
The Group have not done any major fund-raising since the shop closed five years ago, and funds have declined. As most funding organisations will not consider applications for funding until we had less than 12 months reserves, we did not make any applications till this autumn. We have now applied to several organisations for funding, but we will not know any results till the New Year.
To ensure the continuation of the Group and the Drop-in, the committee have had to make some difficult decisions to cut our costs. We have decided to suspend the monthly Social Night on a Wednesday evening. Due to the lack of numbers attending the Drop-in on a Thursday, where some weeks no one has attended, we are suspending the Drop-in on a Thursday. We have also made the painful decision to make the position of Drop-in Organiser redundant. With the suspension of the Social Night and Thursday’s Drop-in there will be insufficient demand for the minibus. We will put the minibus up for sale in the New Year.
John has been running the Drop-in for over fourteen years, and his excellent and hard work has contributed greatly to the success of the Drop-in. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank John for all his effort and excellent work over these years.
After taking these difficult decisions, the current funds we have in the bank will allow us to run the Drop-in and the Group until at least the end of September 2014. We will continue to make further funding applications in the New Year. If you know of any local organisations, Social Clubs or funding organisations that would consider an application from the Group could you please let me know, by contacting me by telephone (01642-617864) or the Group’s e-mail address on the front page of the bulletin. If anyone has had experience of writing funding applications, and would like to help could you please contact me.
I will keep you informed on how our fund raising efforts progress

New Medical Student.
The group are happy to welcome Ross Holcombe as our assigned medical student for this year. As usual with our placements Ross is in his first year at Durham University studying medicine. Ross already has one degree in pharmacology from Southampton. He originates from Croydon in south east London but his grandparents came from the north Yorkshire area. He is very interested in the surgical aspects of his course, but this may change over time. He is a keen rower and part of the university rowing team and he also enjoys swimming (which is handy if the rowing goes wrong!).

2008 sees us with a new medical student –Stephen Worthy. Stephen is from Witney in Oxfordshire and is studying medicine at Durham. He has yet to decide on an area in which to specialise, but thinks that surgery would probably be the area that would most interest him. Currently he is living in halls in Stockton, his hobbies are playing badminton and squash and likes anything in the field of athletics that gets his adrenalin running.

Sales for w/e 17th November 2007, were a fantastic £1,543.94

Our Charity Shop in Appleby House at Thornaby goes from strength to strength.
This year we have suffered two floods, both in May. The building adjacent to ourselves, Brus House, was demolished earlier this year (as part of the Thornaby Town Centre redevelopment), and caused quite severe problems with debris and dust.
Despite these problems, Carol and all the staff have remained cheerful and have managed to keep the shop clean and tidy, and to sell mountains of goods. During one week in September we had our best weekly sales ever, with sales of £1,161. During the months of September and October sales have averaged over £1,000 per week. Sales this year up to the end of October exceed £33,000. WELL DONE
Thank you to all our members and friends who have donated goods to the shop, and all the people who have called into the shop to say hello and spend their money.
The Charity Shop is our main source of funding. The funds generated by the shop are used to run the Drop in Centre and to pay for the upkeep (fuel, insurance, repairs etc.) of our two adapted minibuses.
Finally as regards to the future of the shop, we know it will close, as part of the Thornaby Town Centre redevelopment, but at the time of writing we have not been given a closing date.

Andrew is from Bushmills in Co. Antrim and is studying medicine at the University of Durham. Part of his course requires him to undertake a placement in the community and the group are lucky to have him until December 2006.
Andrew says that he is really enjoying the experience and that it’s “a really great bunch of people” within the group. He first became interested in MS while working as a waiter in a hotel where he met someone with MS for the first time and always wanted to know more.
On completion of his course he hopes to specialise in radiology.
